Chiropractic & Pregnancy

Pregnancy causes many uncomfortable side-effects that can be effectively treated by your chiropractor, instead of using medications. Some of the most common are:

  • Changes in sleep
  • Headache
  • Lower back and hip pain
  • Pelvic pain
  • Ankle and foot pain
  • Round ligament pain (abdominal muscles that connect to the pelvis and are strained in later stages of pregnancy as the enlarged uterus pushes against them)
Numerous studies have found that chiropractic adjustments are successful in safely treating headaches, lower back, hip and pelvic pain in pregnant women. Additionally, ankle and foot pain are common side-effects of third trimester pregnancy that can be effectively treated through chiropractic. Through soft tissue manipulation and gentle adjustments to the spine and extremities, chiropractic is a safe and effective way to reduce pain and dysfunction in the body during pregnancy, and when pain is reduced, sleep is often improved.

In the last trimester of pregnancy, round ligament pain can sometimes become problematic for mothers-to-be, and chiropractic adjustments for the lower back, hips, and pelvis address this pain. With the spine and round ligaments in alignment, the uterus is allowed to function properly and move into position for the birth! Dr. Paul has supported many other mothers-to-be for over 20 years, and has a great deal of expertise in combining localized soft tissue manipulation with chiropractic adjustments that are tailored to the patient’s body to provide maximum relief for any symptom she may experience.

Sports & Chiropractics

  • The spine is the largest physical portion of the nervous system and plays a crucial role in exercise and sports activities for people of all ages. Chiropractic care, exercise, and sports go hand-in-hand for many reasons. Regular chiropractic care can help to effectively:
    • Improve muscle and nerve function
    • Promote stability, balance, and flexibility
    • Decrease pain with activity
    • Promote endurance
When it comes to sports injuries, chiropractic treatments and recommended therapies work well to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling by removing any spinal imbalances that could interfere with the body’s natural healing processes. Dr. Paul has more than 20 years of chiropractic experience in rehabilitative physical education and care, extending back to his pre-chiropractic days as a physical therapist’s assistant while he was in chiropractic school. If you have any questions about how chiropractic can help assist in recovering from an exercise or sports injury, call our office anytime for a consultation.

Pediatric Chiropractic

  • Pediatric chiropractic is a huge part of our family practice. Parents routinely seek chiropractic care to implement their pediatrician’s advice for conditions like:
    • Colic
    • Earaches
    • Bedwetting
    • Constipation
    • Immune system deficiencies
    • Sleep problems
Chiropractic adjustments are recommended for people of all ages, including infants! Chiropractic studies have found that about 95% of infants exhibit spinal misalignment occurring during birth, which if left untreated, can lead to future imbalances as the child develops. Falls are also extremely common with children of all ages, causing imbalances that can lead to future dysfunctional patterns that can contribute to spinal disc degeneration disorders.
Chiropractic adjustments for children are gentler and take less pressure than for adults. Dr. Paul has treated infants for over 20 years that are now adults who can attest to his expertise in this field, and has 6 children of his own that he has treated since birth. Call our office anytime to schedule a consultation or if you have any questions about chiropractic’s role in pediatric care.

Active Release Technique

These factors can cause your body to produce tough, dense scar tissue in the affected area. The scar tissue builds up and ties down tissues that need to move more freely. As the scar tissue builds, muscles can become shortened and weak, the tension on the tendons can cause tendonitis, and the nerves can easily become trapped. These factors can cause a reduced range of motion, loss of strength, and severe pain. If a nerve is trapped, you can also experience tingling, numbness, and overall weakness.

  • Active Release Technique® (ART) is a manual therapy administered only by trained and certified professionals to various soft tissue structures of the body. The ART soft tissue management system is based on scientific evidence that muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue develop adhesions within and between them as a result of various injuries. These injuries include:
    • Acute (sudden injury)
    • Cumulative (chronic injury)
    • Pressure (imbalances in posture).
These adhesions cause the motion of muscles or joints to be altered, resulting in a wide variety of symptoms throughout the body including pain, weakness and reduced range of motion, numbness and tingling.
After conducting a thorough examination of patients seeking ART, Dr. Paul will assess which of over 500 movements are needed to address the soft tissue imbalances contributing to pain and mobility issues.
ART is performed with a direct contact from the doctor to the patient's skin. Dr. Paul will find the area to be worked on and either have the patient actively move a body part or passively move the body part for the patient. The practitioner’s contact, coupled with the movement of the patient, allows the adhesions to separate.
Patients must take an active role in their recovery to help reduce the chances of adhesions reoccurring. This may involve strengthening a certain tissue or changing certain activities. Dr. Paul will recommend a detailed care plan and keep his ART patients informed of such activities. Call our office anytime if you have any questions about ART or would like to schedule a consultation.

Graston Technique
The Graston Technique® is an innovative form of instrument-aided tissue mobilization used by a clinician to effectively break down fascial restrictions and scar tissue in order to promote healing. Low blood supply across the fibrous and scar tissue is a contributing factor to post-injury lingering pain. The aim of the Graston Technique is to create micro-traumas at the damaged tissue in restore blood flow and enhance the body’s natural healing processes. The Graston Technique is commonly sought-out for conditions including:
  • Plantar fascitis
  • Carpal tunnel
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Hamstring/calf injuries
  • Limited shoulder and chest wall mobility following mastectomy/breast cancer treatment
  • Tennis/golfer’s elbow
To perform the Graston Technique, Dr. Paul uses a variety of patented stainless steel instruments to mobilize and release scar tissue and adhesions that may be restricting normal motion and function in a region or regions of the body.
Considered a somewhat aggressive type of soft-tissue manipulation, the Graston Technique uses the body’s natural response to soft-tissue trauma and inflammation to quickly and effectively reduce pain and promote structural healing. Most Graston patients report that the initial session is generally quite painful, but Dr. Paul pays special attention to and communicates with his patients about their pain threshold. Contact our office at any time if you have any questions about the Graston Technique or would like to schedule a consultation.

So, what is an ART treatment like?

An ART session is actually a combination of an examination and a treatment. Dr. Calvillo will manually evaluate the texture, tightness and movement of the muscles, fascia, tendons, ligaments & nerves. Any abnormal tissues that Dr. Calvillo finds will be treated by combining precisely directed tension with very specific movements.

The treatment protocols - over 500 specific moves - are only unique to ART. Dr. Calvillo can identify and correct the specific problems that are affective each individual patient. The goal with an ART treatment is to shorten the tissue, apply a contact tension, and lengthen the tissue or make it slide relative to the adjacent tissue.

An ART treatment can compliment the chiropractic care that you are receiving. Contact our team today to find out if an ART treatment would benefit your overall wellness journey.
